One of the better family movies of it's time. See more Blu B Jul 25 One of the best Walt Disney remakes and arugably the most justified one. The original was a perfect opportunity to improve on multiple aspects of a flawed but charming family movie. Gone is the medicore musical numbers, the cheesy comedy has been stripped down 80%-90%, and the dragon is no longer 2D hand drawn. On top of taking a sledgehammer to the originals core structure and plot, pretty much everything as a end result is just improved upon signifcantly. It's got a Speilberg like wonder tone to the whole thing. AND THEY MADE IT ONLY 95 MINUTES WITHOUT CREDITS!!! The original ran over 2 hours and for the first time it feels like they added a lot more despite taking out near half an hour. Why can't every Walt Disney remake do this and not add 40 minutes that somehow take away. Is it perfect? No...it focuses a lot on Pete rather than the dragon and they get split up in the middle and it feels like 2 seperate films. The villian isn't bad but kind of forgettable and stock motivations. But I have to say despite not much action most of the time it does a great job just having a sincererity to the entire thing and wonder. Great acting especially B.D.H. who is really good here. The special effects are really good and not much in the way of CGI until the final action scene. It keeps everything grounded and looks great because most of this is shot on location and it looks great. Pete's design is really good to and I like it more than the original. It does a great job capturing the animated emotions. the music is really good despite not having any musical numbers. It's still used and composed very well. Great acting, cinematography and everything else is really good overall with great direction. This is how you do a remake and it earns bonus points for adding a new take on everything wrong with the original and doing it's own thing and surpassing the original by miles. Anyone who has seen the original, or is a fan of the director, any actors in this, Disney remakes, family movies, or fantasy flicks should check this out. See more Read all reviews
