Mr. Donovan shows a talent for the poetic depiction of small-town life in flickering, quotidian scenes shot with constantly moving hand-held cameras.
The edge achieved by director-editor-producer-scribe Garth Donovan is jeopardized by overreaching for topical relevance.
Donovan's idiosyncratic approach to character develops a compelling rhythm, but the film falters when a dramatic double climax pushes it past its low-key limits.
The film isn't very good for reasons common to a low-budget work early in a director's career.
