12/01/2012 I watched Phoenix 2772 because of my long-running love of all works by Tezuka. This wasn't directed by him, but it was produced by him and is loosely based on one of his most beloved series. For those who are very familiar with his work, you'll see his touch throughout (like the 12 minute dialogue-free opening sequence) and his homages to various animated musical sequences. You will also find the story deals with recurring themes common in Tezuka's body of work such as the nature of humanity and robotics (can a robot be a human, how we relate to machines, etc) as well as humanity's self-destructive nature. The problem with this film is two-fold. It doesn't really have the emotional core of most of Tezuka's work, and its just pretty boring. It attempts to make some statements, but they just get lost in a plodding narrative. See more Read all reviews
