Critics Consensus

Proxima sometimes struggles to communicate its themes, but worthy intentions and a powerful central performance from Eva Green more than compensate.

  • Green is at a career-best as the stoic Sarah, simultaneously determined and on the edge of breaking. So often hamming it up in Tim Burton roles, you forget just how exceptionally subtle she can be.

  • The moving mother-daughter story at its core gives all the space-walk prep and zero gravity logistics a steady emotional grounding - one that builds to a powerful liftoff in the closing reel.

  • Fortunately, the action moves forward more so from Green's reactions then the dialogue.

  • In the end, PROXIMA isn't quite next to the stars, but there are enough unique elements, including a beautiful central performance, to forgive its more thudding metaphors.

  • With beautiful direction and cinematography, a haunting score, and excellent acting by Eva Green in particular, Proxima is a solemn, slow meditation on motherhood and the bond between mother and daughter.
