Critics Consensus

Proxima sometimes struggles to communicate its themes, but worthy intentions and a powerful central performance from Eva Green more than compensate.

  • Green is at a career-best as the stoic Sarah, simultaneously determined and on the edge of breaking. So often hamming it up in Tim Burton roles, you forget just how exceptionally subtle she can be.

  • The moving mother-daughter story at its core gives all the space-walk prep and zero gravity logistics a steady emotional grounding - one that builds to a powerful liftoff in the closing reel.

  • It is a tad perplexing given the premise why director Alice Winocour is so dramatically unadventurous...There are a few too many cozy concessions to the film's feel-good brief...Getting off the ground is the one thing the film can't quite manage.

  • Alice Winocour's vaguely awkward drama is saved from the brink by a strong performance by the luminous Eva Green, and she's matched by little Zélie Boulant as her eight-year-old daughter.

  • ...does make one think very briefly about the gender inequalities of science and space travel but there isn't enough substance here for a long-haul mission.

  • I can't remember the last time I was as moved - nay, emotionally wrecked - by a film as I was by Alice Wincour's Proxima ... Non-parents may not get it; parents may find Proxima their film of the year. Astronauts too.
