Movie Info

A socially awkward band geek, Steven Turano, divulges to a pro-suicide support group that he's planning on killing himself. He's constantly picked on by former childhood friend and school bully, Nick Perkins, and his widowed father, for whom he harbors a deep resentment for over his mother's passing. However, when Clarence, the new quirky kid in school, befriends him, Steven's plans are sidetracked and he reaches beyond his comfort zone forming stronger relationships with his father, friends, and teachers. The boys form an inseparable bond as Clarence finds creative ways to pull Steven out of his depression. With his newfound sense of purpose and confidence, Steven learns that he's capable of standing up to his father. With a shared love of the arts, Steven and Clarence organize an original school play, and crusade beyond self-imposed limits. While Steven's confidence and popularity grows as a result of Clarence's friendship, Nick's relationship with his alcoholic father, Mr. Perkins, becomes more dysfunctional. Nick grows increasingly jealous of Steven and Clarence's rise to power and is pushed to a breaking point at school, confronting Steven and Clarence.

Critic Reviews for Reach

All Critics (5) | Top Critics (1)

Its heart is in the right place when it comes to many of the boldly-portrayed sentiments, but it plays like a hokey after-school special rather than an alarming wake-up call.

Oct 19, 2018 | Full Review…

Reach is a thoroughly teen movie - its maturity and proficiency are outstripped by its desire and ambition.

Nov 10, 2018 | Full Review…

Uneven drama about bullying, suicide can be preachy.

Oct 26, 2018 | Rating: 2/5 | Full Review…

Coupled with a strong, charismatic cast and intelligent dialogue, this is a relatively original coming-of-age story.

Oct 19, 2018 | Rating: B+ | Full Review…

It suffers from its strictly by-the-book approach and heavily mannered performances (especially from Fiore) which mean we're constantly aware that we're watching something artificial.
