Movie Info

Colm (Tom Vaughan-Lawlor) is living a comfortable life in his mid-40s: he has a good job, a loving wife, and teenage kids. However, after the death of his father, he finds himself spiraling out of control. It is then made worse when his job is threatened by an unprecedented takeover. Unable to disclose the crisis that is raging within him to his wife, Colm finds reprieve in his intimate encounters with Jay (Tom Glynn-Carney), a young man dabbling in prostitution. Soon enough, he starts to find peace in Jay that no one else could provide. Directed by Peter Mackie Burns.

  • "Rialto" builds an intimate portrait of masculine crisis, illuminated by two extraordinary central performances, but stops just short of converting all that insight into truly powerful cinema.

  • This story of real-life misery could play out in many different ways but few would go in the specific direction of Peter Mackie Burns' Rialto, or would tell the story quite as delicately.

  • Vaughan-Lawlor is the real star, with his sweet, sympathetic and loving performance the heart of the film.

  • Peter Mackie Burns realises that an elliptical cut can be just as powerful as a fistfight or shouting match, and an ambiguous final shot more satisfying than a pat conclusion.

  • [I]t's exceptionally well directed by Mackie Burns, who elevates the stage-sourced material into an exacting piece of cinema that teases out some complex father-son themes...

  • It's a little too mumbly and mopey to engage properly, and perhaps too deliberately pointed as well. But it's so intimately directed by Peter Mackie Burns that it can't help but be moving.
