06/15/2018 It might just be me. I have supported Mike, Kevin, and Bill (and writers Sean and Conor) at Rifftrax from the very first Kickstarter campaign. I've spoken to all of them at various events and phone interviews over the years. I admire all of them and their work very much! I'm not sure how many more Rifftrax events I can support financially and emotionally. This year's kickstarter campaign launched a MST3K beloved classic, Space Mutiny (1988) and a 1980s cult favorite Krull (1983). I adore the original riff for Space Mutiny. I have probably watched it 20 times. I looked forward to seeing the guys take it on AGAIN. In conversations beforehand, I equated the live performance to seeing one of your favorite bands LIVE performing one of your favorite albums of theirs. You may have high expectations and you may be disappointed in the results but you'll have the experience and the story to tell afterward. Well....Rifftrax LIVE: Space Mutiny was just that...a disappointment that just left this fan wanting to put the record back on and listen to the original to get the bad taste of the LIVE version out of my mouth. In fact, I did just that on Netflix as I drove home from the theater. I LOVE THIS RIFF in its original format. I did not find much joy in the Rifftrax LIVE presentation. The jokes that they offered paled in comparison with the perfection of the original. The fact that they avoided the old jokes so carefully made me cringe every time. I was laughing OFTEN at the old jokes in my head as the guys layed down new material over the existing structure. As a financial supporter of Rifftrax, I was much more entertained by the behind-the-scenes video that the performers and writers shot on Wednesday night (the night before the performance). They were much better at examining the depth of the audience's frustration with this movie with beers in their hands than they were in the scripting of the riff. Why wasn't any of that frustration in the language of the riff? Isn't that a part of the act? In August, I will go see Rifftrax LIVE: Krull. They've never riffed this movie before so there is nothing to compare it to. Krull was a staple of growing up in the 80s. Everyone saw this movie at the time. I'm pretty sure everyone thought it was dumb then and didn't really revisit it much over the last 35 years. I hope that the Rifftrax writers will give the humor the right 21st century spin to bounce off of the shlock 1980s story / costumes / makeup / acting / comic relief / etc... Again, It might just be me. It might be that my expectations for Space Mutiny were incorrectly set. I hope for a great night of riffing for Krull on August 23rd and 25th, 2018. https://www.fathomevents.com/events/rifftrax-live-krull See more Read all reviews
