Movie Info

This is an early-'50s effort that attempts to portray the shoulder-bumping, step-ahead world of the unmentionable American caste system. Jennifer Jones stars as Ruby Corey, who turns into Ruby Gentry, a poor-white Carolina girl who, when spurned by a social "higher-up" (Charlton Heston), decides to marry a Daddy Warbucks-type (Karl Malden) successful businessman to get even with her lost lover.

Not entirely successful, but well worth seeing.

June 24, 2006 | Full Review…

There's catharsis to be found in the manner in which Ruby lays waste to her tormentors. But most of the characters lack any real depth.

Southern swampland romantic drama that's filled with an almost hysterical emotional fervor.

August 21, 2009 | Rating: C+ | Full Review…

This is sweeping, unconvincing melodrama which is nonetheless compulsively watchable.

everyone in the film is nuts. it's a slightly smaller scale 'duel in the sun' with a bit better acting from the leads but heston is no substitute for peck's hotness
