Middle generation Shaft looks good roaring around in his souped-up Monte Carlo SS. It's too bad the characters as a whole didn't have a better vehicle.

Tim Story's update of the blaxploitation classic is shamelessly regressive. Male dinosaurs again walk the earth with misogynistic and homophobic impunity. These are the laughs, folks. Don't be surprised if they stick in your throat.

Shaft (2019) is one of the more fun "passing of the torch" sequels/reboots that are so in vogue right now. It's definitely the kind of fun matinee screenings were made for.

I suspect Barris, or maybe even both writers, wrote a script calling out the toxicity of the Shaft archetype. Tim Story, and maybe even Samuel L. Jackson, didn't get it and thought Sasha and J.J. were the villains. Or maybe they just didn't think.

Shaft is a missed opportunity, particularly at the chance to comment on how being a "complicated man" has evolved since 1971, and how the world has never simply been black and white.
