Michael D @MichaelX 6h Neither of us has any real desire to take a cruise as a week in close quarters with no possibility of escape holds zero appeal, but we’re devoted disaster doc watchers, and this Netflix account of the 2012 Costa Concordia sinking definitely delivers. The images of that stricken ship lying on its side off the Italian coast were seared into our collective memory, and director Chiara Messineo does a solid job building suspense via survivor interviews, passenger phone footage, and translated bridge recordings that expose just how catastrophically the captain failed. My main gripe is a structural one: 32 lives were lost, yet the doc never makes this clear, leaving me to look it up afterward. One bereaved Italian woman’s story is also left frustratingly unresolved and I could have done without the on-screen proselytizing from one interviewed couple. Quibbles aside, though, it’s a gripping addition to the disaster doc canon. See more Eli O @Exxxxx Aug 17 Terrible film! - Absolutely no attention paid to those who died, not even a tribute at the end. Only one story. I’m honestly shocked. Also why does seemingly no one interviewed talk about those who died? The interviews feel incredibly self-centred and focused almost entirely on their own suffering and lives now. - It has a strong "white American lens" vibe: heavy focus on Jesus and faith, plus this need to give every story an uplifting ending. Not everyone believes in God, and not every tragedy needs to be turned into an American-style "overcoming adversity" story. There is no happy ending here for many, so why force one despite actual suffering? - Why does the interviewer say John saved the baby, while not acknowledging his wife? John even ran ahead and lost track of her and the baby, I mean come on his wife deserves more than this.. This should have been not asked and cut out of the documentary. It was bone-chilling to hear the survivors' accounts, and it's amazing that only a few dozen people died. I can definitely see why it has been compared to the sinking of the Titanic. See more Daniel J @RT96717369 Jul 13 Decent storytelling by the survivors, but the show devoted only maybe 5 minutes to WHY this happened and they pretty much defended the captain lol. They didn't even mention that he executed an unauthorized sail-by-salute that led to the accident and instead blamed some unknown helmsman for not speaking English or something.
