...brief, only twenty-five minutes, but it is affecting and probably just the right length for its subject matter. Go to Full Review

Doug N. @dis_doug Dec 1 This 1978 Disney animated featurette is based on the 1947 Christmas novelette of the same name by Charles Tazewell. The Small One is a timeless, touching, and heartwarming tale about a young boy who is told to sell his old donkey friend by his father in the Jerusalem market of Israel. It features beautifully written songs by the film’s director Don Bluth, and assistant director Richard Rich. The film’s hand drawn animation is drawn gracefully to the music and story. This is a compelling take on the birth of Jesus Christ, and a wonderful gem for the holiday season. See more 12/12/2013 Why are these holiday stories involving donkeys so damn depressing?! See more 10/21/2010 I can see what they were trying to do, but the changes are unnecessary and work better without. This is one of the more faithful Disney adaptions, but it reverses the elements around and ignores the narrator subplot. It ignores the nativity which is a really dumb move seeing how the nativity is the punch-line of the story. The tanner scene is one of the worst scenes in Disney history and serves no real purpose but add length. The bankers were completely useless. Plus, of Small One is too weak to carry sticks, why should we trust that he can carry Mary to Bethlehem okay. This short is full of problems and inconsistencies that for some reason get overlooked by most people. And no, this is not a Don Bluth film. Yes, he directed and half the animators left with him when he started a new company. But Disney already had the script ready and Don Bluth only made some slight changes. Don wasn't even the first director on the project. Very overrated, should remain locked in the Disney vault. See more 10/04/2010 I love this short film. It's one of the best around and a very interesting point of view on the old "Joseph and Mary" story. Excellent work Mr. Don Bluth (and the rest of the Disney team too, I guess. . . .) See more 08/01/2005 "The Small One" has become a Christmas favorite for quite a few years now for people all around the world. It captures the spirit of the Holiday season, with one of the most beautiful stories to ever come out from Disney animation. If you haven't seen it, I highly recommend it! See more Read all reviews
