Movie Info

The relationship between two women living in contemporary Berlin sets the stage for director Andreas Dresen's low-key look at urban existence. Nike (Nadja Uhl) and Katrin (Inka Friedrich) live a quiet life, often simply enjoying each other's company while perched on Nike's second-story balcony. When Nike's tenuous relationship with truck driver Ronald (Andreas Schmidt) goes sour, and an attempted rape results in a psychological collapse for Katrin, Katrin's son Max (Vincent Redetzki) quietly observes the tender relationship between the two women before inadvertently complicating their lives when his planned seduction of a friend from school goes awry.

Summer in Berlin is a pointedly unglamorous slice of life that could be set in any urban neighborhood where real estate prices haven't gone through the roof.

April 2, 2007 | Rating: 2.5/5

For a film set during a sweltering season, precious little dramatic heat is brought to bear.

March 31, 2007 | Rating: 3/6 | Full Review…

The movie tends to wander between story lines and characters without any real sense of purpose.

March 30, 2007 | Rating: 2/4 | Full Review…

A very female movie that transcends language and gender.

March 29, 2007 | Rating: 3-4

You won't encounter many movies nearly as good this year from anywhere.

March 28, 2007

Summer in Berlin is most affecting as a character study of two women in their late thirties, at the precise moment in their lives when, with middle age on the march, the fritterings and posturings of youth offer respite.

Audience Reviews for Sommer vorm Balkon

In "Summer in Berlin", Katrin(Inka Friedrich) and Nike(Nadja Uhl) are the best of friends who live in the same apartment building, making the occasional prank call to the pharmacist across the way. Katrin is an unemployed window dresser and aspiring artist who cannot afford the sneakers her son, Max(Vincent Redetzki), wants in order to keep up with Charly(Lil Oggesen), a neighborhood girl. The younger Nike works as a caregiver for the elderly, giving them more attention than their children do. And all of that changes when Katrin is almost hit by a truck crossing the street... "Summer in Berlin" is a bittersweet, gentle and unpredictable tale about how important it is that our friends are there for us at the end of the day. The movie is nothing earth shattering but still certainly worthwhile.
