Movie Info

Shining a light on addiction and the white middle class drug scene, this film centers on a forlorn teenager abandoned in New York City who mistakes the welcoming embrace of a Lower East Side drug dealer for the love of family. The plot follows the sales and distribution of narcotics through teen social circles until they come to a violent end. Benson's fearlessly honest insider view busts the myth of casual drug use as his character, Gene, morphs from troubled child to novice dealer to accidental addict. The ending is a jolt audiences won't forget.

  • Zephyr Benson wrote, directed, produced and starred in this fitfully engaging but unconvincing account of his own tumultous, drug-addled youth.

  • "Straight Outta Tompkins" undeniably commands attention but also strives for authenticity ham-handedly.

  • Only in his early 20s, Zephyr Benson makes a remarkably assured debut as writer, director and star of "Straight Outta Tompkins," his tongue-in-cheek title for his past as a middle-class drug dealer in lower Manhattan.

  • Straight Outta Tompkins is rarely boring, but neither does it come close to attaining the hard-hitting moral force its creator is clearly striving for.
