You're living in these moments with these characters...the most naturalistic set of performances we've seen in a while.

The film accordingly owes a great deal of its power to its actors, who are, of course, more than merely plausible as longtime partners, whose way through the small dramas of the everyday is the movie's real substance.

By the time Tusker and Sam reach the end of the road - both metaphorical and literal, as this is as much a travelogue of England's Lake District - Supernova feels less like a film to cherish and more a tweet to favourite.

Its particular effectiveness depends not only on Firth and Tucci's believability as a couple but also on the complementarity of their respective personas...

Never does "Supernova" try to bite off more than it can handle as it winds toward an inevitable but beautifully rendered destination.

In scene after scene, as the two men visit friends and family one last time, we glimpse the showier, more maudlin film that Supernova could but never does devolve into, hovering just at the edges.

Feb 12, 2021Even though 'Supernova' has a delicate and plaintive burn to it, the impact is more subdued that I hoped for. It sure is easy on the eyes though, featuring the winding English countryside, beautifully rustic townhomes, candle-lit interiors, and lots and lots of shawl-collar knit sweaters. Fascinating to learn that Stanley Tucci (Tusker) and Colin Firth (Sam) were both initially cast as the opposite characters before insisting on swapping roles; having watched the film, I can't envision them another way. Both are damn terrific and Sam and Tusker's respective emotional breakthroughs ring true over a relatively short time. 'Supernova' is a solid showcase for the soul-deep devotion of its characters' love, the turbulence of tackling death head on, and a couple's battle between hope and sorrow. I just wish the film's restrained approach could've moved me a bit more.Marisol M Super Reviewer
