To the outside world Joanne is just a bookstore owner, but The Conspiracy knows she is more than that. She's dangerous, and she's a bellwether: a quiet leader who is well on her way to becoming her whole self. When she is kidnapped, it is discovered that she is something so much more than even she ever knew.

A fascinating if ultimately failed exercise in histrionics and social commentary. Go to Full Review

"The Bellwether" suffers from intense self-importance; and too much of the film consists of the heroine defending her life and rebutting her torturer with familiar feminist/humanist talking-points. Go to Full Review

09/20/2020 This reminded me of mental breakdown movies from the 70s: overwrought, straining at the seams with meaningful images that are easily forgettable. This one-woman performance is a valiant effort and Alex Reid turns in several choice scenes, but it all goes to support the movie-craft axiom that "Nobody really knows the movie the director is making." This feels like a worthwhile short film that is padded out to feature-length running time. A deft editor could cut this down to a coherent 20 minutes.
