1916. As war rages on the Western Front, the Choral Society in Ramsden, Yorkshire has lost most of its men to the army. The Choral's ambitious committee, determined to press ahead, decides to recruit local young males to swell their ranks. They must also engage a new chorus master, and despite their suspicions that he has something to hide, their best bet seems to be Dr. Henry Guthrie (Ralph Fiennes) -- driven, uncompromising, and recently returned from a career in Germany. As conscription papers start to arrive, the whole community discovers that the best response to the chaos that is laying waste to their lives is to make music together.

Old-fashioned in the best sense. The period details are lovingly applied; the script, by the great Alan Bennett, is beautifully crafted; and the performances, led by the marvelous Ralph Fiennes as the town’s reluctant choirmaster, are all standouts.

A reenvisioning of Elgar’s Catholic devotional that ties it in a profound and moving fashion to the time and place of The Choral, and the underlying idea that a little music, a little companionship, can’t stop the horror but it can provide a respite.

The Brits do this kind of light and dark juggling act better than almost anybody, and the filmmakers and their cast deliver a movie that's perfect for viewing on a lazy Sunday afternoon at the movie theater.

An enjoyable period piece… the small stories of young men returning from war and going off to war were set against a backdrop of a community choir’s presentation. The acting and music were very good and there was also quite a bit of humor. Worth seeing.

A very enjoyable slice of life story about a small towns effort to persevere in the arts during the 1916 WW1 campaign. Ralph Fiennes is outstanding as per usual. Im so glad I took the chance and watched this in a theatre. Streaming content factories like Notflix wont create something this thoughtful, you have to find it and cherish it on your own.

Didn't Pack the Expected Punch

I was less than impressed w/ the movie. I expected to be emotionally rung out by the end of it, but honestly felt myself unmoved. The acting -- as expected -- was toprate. I applaud how the homosexuality of the choir master & his pianist was very, very subtly implied, as would be the norm for the moraes of the time. The expressions of heterosexuality were overt & made for an interesting exploration of how such behavior was affected in that time of war. It was the music that did not deliver. I think that the overriding theme of the movie was that art has the power to transcend, distracts, & heals. Unfortunately, the choice of music, the piece by Elgar, did anything but. It was presented in a very disjointed way. The adaptation of it to fit the times did not work. It was just a messy, ear jolting mess that left me quite unsatisfied & annoyed.

For a movie taking place during the First World War, the characters were so agreeable with each other that there was a lack any actual conflict or struggle for the characters to overcome.
