African-American Mac McGhee (Roger Guenveur Smith) moves into an exclusively white neighborhood in the 1940s along with his wife, Minnie (Lynn Whitfield), and their two sons. Their next-door neighbor, Anna Sipes (Linda Hamilton), welcomes them, and the women become good friends. But the rest of the neighbors, including Anna's husband, Benjamin (Bruce Greenwood), aren't so happy living near a black family, and band together to have the McGhees removed.
