• "The Edge of Heaven"'s intricate, almost melodramatic plot shamelessly employs coincidences-much the way "Babel" did-but where that movie's tragic events seemed gratuitous and strained, Akin has a richer, deeper sense of character.

  • What we don't suspect, going in, is that a film of such plain-speaking admonitions can exploit the element of surprise. Yet this heartfelt and precisely assembled drama does just that.

  • Propelled by the beautiful camerawork and scenery that moves back and forth between pastoral idyll and urban chaos as it takes the viewer on a journey that ends with a final image as quiet and beautiful as any in recent cinema.

  • The Edge of Heaven explores topics as varied as the tensions that accompany multiculturalism and globalization to the simpler human drama of how individuals cope with losses for which they bear a portion of the responsibility.

  • The care that Akin expends on his people is skimped in the structure of his screenplay.

  • In a single two-hour film, Akin strikes the notes of emotional distress, geographical dissonance, generational discord, and nearly divine convergence that Kieslowski orchestrated over nearly six hours.

A number of people started comparing The Edge of Heaven to Babel/Crash and other vertebrate type storylines alike. And even though there is a structural resemblance, the director Akin, a prodigy of immigration himself, makes a movie oozing nostalgia for home; in one thread home is the love of one's life, in another it is the country of origin, in the other one the bosom of a woman, and in another belonging to a cause. Notable mention should be made to the exceptional editing which invariably adds irony and suspense.

Like Amores Perros, The Edge of Heaven tells three stories that are connected. The first two are pretty much independent from each other, while the third one is kind of the result of those two stories. They both had enough material to make more than one movies, and the final result is a film that isn't fleshed out enough in parts. Still, The Edge of Heaven explores interesting themes and looks beautiful.

Quite a hard, full of irony and interesting story. The turns and folds of the story, as well as the social context and the emotinal injection, makes it shine like no other.

There are three very good stories to tell here, but the problem is they each deserved their own movie because as it is none of them feel fully realized; the characters aren't so much developed as they just change according to what the plot needs. Nevertheless, it becomes more and more interesting as it goes along.
