Erksine forgoes talking heads for interspersed audio of Curry's peers and admirers, keeping the film's visual and emotional focus on the man himself and the transporting power of his art.
It is respectful and interesting.
Even if you have little interest in the world of figure skating, this is still an interesting look at a true pioneer whose innovations and influences can still be felt and recognized to this day.
With its attention to family and changing attitudes both to gender and sexuality... this was social history of the best, by which I mean the slyest, kind.
An unusually moving documentary about a remarkable man.
John Erskine's absorbing documentary The Ice King explores Curry's short but hectic life using archive footage and interviews. His grace on the ice still makes one gasp.
James Erskine's excellent documentary suggests that, at the height of his career, Curry's gayness was somewhere between a rumour and an open secret.
The Ice King is a focused, elegantly made documentary, and at a relatively brisk 88 minutes, none of Curry's achievements (or defeats) ever feel like they're being skated over.
The Ice King is a deftly crafted portrait of a melancholy pioneer.
An evocative and lovingly assembled documentary.
There are moments of vagueness when you wish more effort had been made on the nuts-and-bolts stuff. Still, we get a strong sense of Curry's personality -- a sensitive perfectionist -- and there is ample footage of his great routines.
The film paints a portrait of a difficult, driven perfectionist.
