Movie Info

In this offbeat dramedy from Huang Bo, news of a meteorite bound to strike the earth doesn't have much effect on Ma Jin's everyday life; he still gets up and goes to a job where he spends his time daydreaming of a romance with his colleague Shanshan, and of winning the lottery. But when this cataclysmic event occurs during a team-building trip, he finds himself shipwrecked on an island with an odd group of coworkers... and the winning lottery ticket in his pocket.

Unsupported by any sort of greater mythology, few of these asides are worth the time Bo spends on them. At best, they distract from the film's disinterest in more plot-driven mysteries.

An entertaining if overlong dramedy about company workers splitting into rival factions after being shipwrecked on a desert island.

The running time's too long and the humor's too broad, but the story takes some fascinating turns.

There are no good or bad people in The Island, just a group of hapless schmucks who become more sympathetic as they get more desperate.

The psychological dynamics of social interaction are sardonically at play in the skillful survivalist black comedy The Island.

It is the morality tale aspect that is actually strongest here... Too bad the actor-director chooses to overstuff the film instead of delivering a cautionary mystery thriller.
