Critic Reviews for The Last King
It's an iconic tale for Norwegians and the inspiration of the annual Birkebeiner ski race, but a dud with scant dramatic zing or star quality.
Gaup deftly keeps track of the major betrayals without making them seem too obvious, but we're never as involved with the characters as we were in "Pathfinder."
It wasn't an action-packed flick that kept me on the edge of my seat but I enjoyed the history and the scenery and the Tormund. Oh, and the Vikings on skis.
A film that leaves us great features: evocative names, credible settings and, above all, amazing warriors. [Full review in Spanish]
A film that ends up being stimulating (and effective) for something as simple as provoking interest and curiosity for the deepest recesses of the historical period that recreates. [Full review in Spanish]
Audience Reviews for The Last King
I usually love Scandinavian films, but "The Last King" seems to lack the usual polish and attention to detail of those Norwegian films that make it to the United States. The film is good, but somehow, it has a made-for-TV quality that doesn't quite gel with the vast, magestic, frozen landscapes and the magnitude of the historical events. As a history lesson, it gets good marks, but as entertainment? -- M'eh.
I saw this w/o the benefit of subtitles, which is totally in the Nordic tongue, which is to say I hardly understood anything of what was going on ... and yet the sheer adventure of the tale, the raucous ski scenes, kept me watching the whole way through.
