During a snowstorm, the manservant of an English gothic mansion is found dead. When Inspector Hatcher arrives, he finds a household consisting of five women: the Lady Ravenscroft and her mentally unstable daughter Gillian, the governess Miss Keiner, the maid Dolly, and the cook Mrs. French. Each of the women tells a different story and seems to be protecting somebody. In his endeavor to the truth, the inspector becomes more and more muddled.
