Movie Info

The WWII internment of Japanese-Americans from a unique perspective: through the eyes of those who defied the armed guards, barbed wire and searchlights to fish for trout in the surrounding waters of the Eastern Sierra. While larger battles were being fought in the courts, the Manzanar fishermen were exercising their rights on the ground. This is the untold story of those who refused to knuckle under and risked all to go fishing just like other ordinary Americans.

"The Manzanar Fishing Club'' has enough interesting footage for perhaps a 15-minute segment of a TV news magazine.

All this is welcome; all this is too little. The Zen appeal of a river running through it is at best postcard-pretty, and not much deeper.

The historical road less traveled-shot in re-enactments that are obviously familiar with the terrain-is beguiling enough.

Ingeniously, and warmly, looks at a surprising chapter in the story of an internment camp in Eastern California.

At its best, the film uses fishing as a window into the internment experience. At its worst, it uses the internment story as the backdrop for a documentary on trout fishing.

Some of the stories of ingenuity - whether in creating fishing equipment out of scavenged materials or hiding their activities from authorities - are amusing or moving.
