The Old Guard

Critics Consensus

The Old Guard is occasionally restricted by genre conventions, but director Gina Prince-Bythewood brings a sophisticated vision to the superhero genre - and some knockout action sequences led by Charlize Theron.

Theron's great talent is being 100% credible regardless of the role, which is exactly what this movie needed to work. Also, its a lot sadder than you'd expect which, given the silly premise, is quite the achievement.

Netflix really wants their franchise starter, and overall this isn't a bad one. It holds its own, but still makes you want a little more. They establish a pretty interesting mythos that I really wanted to know more about. That being said, I like that even the powered characters in this don't know how or why they are powered, they just are. I love stuff like that, where you only get a glimpse and are sort of on the same page as the characters. When the action gets going, it's pretty solid action too. It's not the best I've seen, but there's an energy, creativity, and brutality to it that I really liked. In terms of criticism, I didn't always like how slow and mopey the movie got at times. We need time for our characters to breathe, but sometimes it felt a little dull and overly brooding. Still, I liked it. I like the characters, I like the world, I like the action, I want to see more.

The Old Guard has an interesting premise but the filmmaker choice wasn't ideal. The never ending soundtrack is distracting and laughable at times. The key to the films success is the cast and the second unit action director. It was nice to see Greg Rucka wrote the screenplay as he created the original comic the film is based on. Theron is the key here and she controls the screen from the opening scene. She's clearly is at home with the action genre and it's refreshing to see studios gamble on female lead roles. The Old Guard lacks a central villain worthy of the running time but there's enough characters and story here to ensure there's a sequel down the line. Netflix clearly have the interest of star quality so it's refreshing to have original films that aren't built on top of Marvel and DC properties. The Old Guard may be an adaptation but it's from an indie Image Comics label and only has a small loyal fan base. Fingers crossed Netflix dials down and delivers a sequel for us. I hope they replace the filmmaker but I suspect that won't happen due to the films success, hopefully they can substitute the endless music with an actual film score. 10/07/2020

Seemingly made as a possible first-of-a-series generator, the story concerns the efforts of a mad scientist to obtain the blood of a group of mercenary immortals. While the most interesting element of the tale remained underwater, the rest is hurried along, an introduction mainly to the characters and their motivations. I guess the meat of the tale is meant to follow. Charlize Theron is our primary guide, and this she performs well enough, holding our hands and acting as our reason to hang around until we're hooked into the back-up characters. Of course the usual gang of black suited and masked armored SWAT surrogates are hanging around waiting to march in threateningly and later to be ruthlessly dispatched. I wondered in the midst of the usual carnage what was their sad story?
