By the end of "The Peacemaker," you feel you're watching a Samuel Beckett character furiously trying to improvise himself out of the play. In the process, he's bringing the rest of us along.
The Peacemaker is absorbing, and O'Malley is a fascinating character.
The weight of the world is evident in O'Malley's dour gaze, but it's clear too, in Demo's sensitive, piercing portrait, that the endless job he's carved out for himself is his lifeblood, and its own kind of addiction.
The more we get to know him, the more his core motivation - is he an idealist or something else? - becomes the mystery of the film.
The movie is a fascinating portrait that is if anything too brief.
An intense, intimate portrait of a visionary capable of sophisticated analysis, abrupt anger, self-deprecating wit, and profound insights - all while existing at considerable remove from his fellow man.
While an uplifting story to be sure, there's also a great deal of pain; pain that [subject] O'Malley, and his closest confidantes, don't shy away from discussing.
One of the essential keys to the film's slow, entwining charm, beyond O'Malley's intoxicatingly idiosyncratic personality, is the effusive patience demonstrated by Demo.
The Peacemaker must-see portrait of world-renowned negotiator Padraig O'Malley, who cannot put his own demons to rest.
The Peacemaker tackles a fascinating character, but never digs beneath surface details in O'Malley's life.
Fascinating documentary on a Don Quixote peacemaker trying to bring healing to a war-torn world
It's that rare doc that successfully blends a newsworthy subject (international peace negotiations) with an intimate portrait.
