Bullied by Casey Burke (Thomas Gomez), the dishonorable sheriff of a rural county, well-known newspaper editor Haven D. Allridge (Walter Pidgeon) decides to strike back against the lawman's unjust behavior. Enlisting lawyer Chick Johnson (John Hodiak) to help oust Burke, Allridge runs into more conflict when the sheriff takes ruthless measures in an attempt to get the editor to back down. Burke's devious actions lead to a tense standoff between the two men.
