It was crap! … I love an anti-developer narrative, but it was so insubstantial. … I felt embarrassed for these actors, the way they were capering. There are so many good examples of this kind of thing done so much better; just watch one of them instead.

The mystery, in the first of what will likely be a series of films, isn’t really that interesting. But it draws in fine stage-and-screen actors like David Tennant, Jonathan Pryce, Naomie Ackie and Daniel Mays.

This movie had all the elements of a blockbuster hit. Incredible cast, talented filmmaker, beautiful music. But the writing: atrocious. Everything was overexplained, there was no nuance, and nothing was left to interpretation. Murder mysteries should engage the audience in dramatic irony, reveal bits and pieces, and allow the viewer to mull information over attempting to solve it on their own. There were some definite twists, but overall, the dialogue was so poorly written I scarcely noticed them. I created an IMDB account for the sole purpose of reviewing this movie because it was so terrible. As a lover of murder mysteries, I was sorely disappointed.

Strangely bad. It was like they were trying to write a murder mystery for elderly Hallmark viewers. Boring, and predictable. Everyone was a caraciture. Performances were fine, but there was no soul to it beyond the pretty setting.

So we all know some movies change the original source material. That's fine, it's suppose to make the movie its own bit of fun. But when the movie changes the who did it and destroys a beloved character who is in all the other books as a good guy... Well then you can't like the movie as there can't really be any more movies based on the source material. So if there are the sequels to come they'll be their own story not the book series. So no this, despite a banger of a cast, is not good. Such a shame. Go read or listen to the books. Much better.

Following the trend of bringing together an A list actors to solve a mystery it hits target. Enjoyable yet the story isn't quite as engaging as it could be. Definitely could be seeing a series of movies with this brand and I would probably watch them. It is a good way to spend an evening on couch with some popcorn and a glass of your favorite drink and just relax.
