Critics Consensus

Cozy as an undemanding beach reach and just as slight, this starry murder mystery leverages its terrific troupe of actors to nostalgic effect.

There’s plenty of money on screen in the handsome production design, but something meagre and perfunctory about the storytelling. Go to Full Review

There is some shock value, but the film goes too far in evading the truth; it nearly forgets to establish an emotional tether between the audience and its suspects. Go to Full Review

Sometimes all you need is a nice, safe, and utterly pleasant piece of cinematic diversion that doesn’t insult your intelligence and is made with sturdy, workmanlike competence. Go to Full Review

Although the screenwriters try to inject some humour, style and swagger into the story, the presence of veteran Hollywood director Chris Columbus at the helm only confirms a sense of franchise-building, rather than delivering something truly special. Go to Full Review

It was crap! … I love an anti-developer narrative, but it was so insubstantial. … I felt embarrassed for these actors, the way they were capering. There are so many good examples of this kind of thing done so much better; just watch one of them instead. Go to Full Review

The mystery, in the first of what will likely be a series of films, isn’t really that interesting. But it draws in fine stage-and-screen actors like David Tennant, Jonathan Pryce, Naomie Ackie and Daniel Mays. Go to Full Review

Megan D @Megaday 2d This movie had all the elements of a blockbuster hit. Incredible cast, talented filmmaker, beautiful music. But the writing: atrocious. Everything was overexplained, there was no nuance, and nothing was left to interpretation. Murder mysteries should engage the audience in dramatic irony, reveal bits and pieces, and allow the viewer to mull information over attempting to solve it on their own. There were some definite twists, but overall, the dialogue was so poorly written I scarcely noticed them. I created an IMDB account for the sole purpose of reviewing this movie because it was so terrible. As a lover of murder mysteries, I was sorely disappointed. See more Steve D @RT35616104 Jul 20 Inoffensive but completely bland. See more Stephen K @RT70804552 Jul 8 Strangely bad. It was like they were trying to write a murder mystery for elderly Hallmark viewers. Boring, and predictable. Everyone was a caraciture. Performances were fine, but there was no soul to it beyond the pretty setting. See more Tom M @RT19268799 Jul 8 So we all know some movies change the original source material. That's fine, it's suppose to make the movie its own bit of fun. But when the movie changes the who did it and destroys a beloved character who is in all the other books as a good guy... Well then you can't like the movie as there can't really be any more movies based on the source material. So if there are the sequels to come they'll be their own story not the book series. So no this, despite a banger of a cast, is not good. Such a shame. Go read or listen to the books. Much better. See more Roven B @cinnephile.01 Jul 1 this was a really good mystery, love how it all tied together, didn't expect who did it in the end, love! See more Angelo R @RT61287290 Jun 28 Following the trend of bringing together an A list actors to solve a mystery it hits target. Enjoyable yet the story isn't quite as engaging as it could be. Definitely could be seeing a series of movies with this brand and I would probably watch them. It is a good way to spend an evening on couch with some popcorn and a glass of your favorite drink and just relax. See more Read all reviews
