Sep 4, 2012 DISCLAIMER: Please read this ENTIRE review before you comment on or respond to it. Thank you. Doing a celluloid version of any book of the Bible is a massive undertaking. For one, most of the books with stories have quite a large cast of folks who are mentioned, whether briefly or throughout. Not only that, but millions of people all over the planet--myself included--hold God's Word in the absolute highest regard. There are also certain parts of the Bible that are hard to show on film, even with Spielberg-style special effects. So, how does "The Visual Bible: Acts" stack up? Well, let's just put it this way: Though the Word that inspired it may be perfect, the film itself isn't. The acting is spot-on, and many scenes are depicted quite well, especially towards the end. Dean Jones isn't a spectacular narrator, but he still did an adequate job. The main quibbles I had with it were twofold: First off, the death of Ananias and Sapphira in Acts 5 is not shown at all; instead of displaying one of the few New Testament depictions of God's wrath, we just see Luke tell some people on the boat about it. Why that wasn't shown, I just don't understand. The other problem? The one event that should not have been shown--King Herod's gruesome death--actually was, but not very well. The producers should have flipped the treatments for those stories around. Other minor issues--a brief belly-dancing scene, poor mastering on the 2007 DVD edition, some needless embellishing of the Biblical book--also existed, but those didn't detract from the experience too much. Parents of young children should take note that, true to the Word, there are some scenes with blood and/or violence, though the latter is sometimes implied, so it might not be appropriate for some kids. Still, it is an audiovisual, word-for-word representation of a book of the Bible, which is hard to come by outside of "The Visual Bible" series. It makes for a great Bible study help and would be wonderful for a teen or adult study on the book of Acts; just don't expect it to be as flawless as the Divine Word that inspired it.
