Catherine Clare (Academy Award®-nominee Amanda Seyfried) reluctantly trades life in 1980s Manhattan for a remote home in the tiny hamlet of Chosen, New York, after her husband George (James Norton) lands a job teaching art history at a small Hudson Valley college. Even as she does her best to transform the old dairy farm into a place where young daughter Franny will be happy, Catherine increasingly finds herself isolated and alone. She soon comes to sense a sinister darkness lurking both in the walls of the ramshackle property-and in her marriage to George.

What to Know

Critics Consensus

The terrors in Things Heard & Seen are overwhelmed by a banal and uninspired adaptation that fails to connect to its haunting source material.

Audience Says

Its strong cast and solid start might make Things Heard & Seen two-thirds of a good movie; unfortunately, that final third sends the whole thing totally off the rails.

It's all crushingly predictable, advancing along the expected lines without even the slightest hint of something extra or new. Go to Full Review

The movie advertised itself as an old-fashioned haunted house tale (check out the trailer to see what I mean). In reality it’s a fraught marriage story full of dark secrets and ugly revelations. Go to Full Review

A rambling, unsatisfying, largely aimless semi-supernatural domestic drama...a truly half-baked affair that wastes an obviously talented cast. Go to Full Review

Joey S @Joseath Oct 23, 2026 One of the more frustrating films I've watched in a long time. The first half had me invested with good characters and a villain that was absolutely detestable, however by the final act it feels everything that's been established has been thrown out the window for a messy and incredibly unsatisfying ending. The premise of a haunted house that the main character slowly realises is trying to protect her from an abusive and toxic relationship is a cool idea that falls flat and ends up having no impact... See more Marco L @decatur555 Oct 22, 2026 A passable and entertaining haunted-house drama that works better through its marriage discomfort than through its ghosts. I watched it with interest: the isolated house, the rural setting, the cold interiors and the sense of secrets from the past give it a nice dark atmosphere. Amanda Seyfried is good as Catherine, fragile and increasingly trapped in a life that looks fine from the outside but is rotten underneath. James Norton also works well as a husband whose cultured image gradually reveals insecurity, lies and control. The problem is that the film never fully decides what it wants to be: marital drama, ghost story, thriller and reflection on guilt, art and death all at once. Some supernatural moments help the mood, but the ghosts are often less interesting than the everyday horror of the relationship. It lacks stronger suspense and the ending becomes too solemn. Not memorable, but watchable and atmospheric enough for a dark mystery afternoon. See more Season C @RT78921740 Sep 2, 2026 It was an intriguing premise that had a lot of potential and then just turned at the end. The actors were great, but whoever okayed that ending made a mistake. See more Drea R @AndreaRose Aug 27, 2026 The acting is awesome. The story is dumb. See more Sparky K @Steve298 Aug 21, 2026 Yet again I seem to have seen a different film to everyone else! Excellent story, script, acting. 2 hours flew by. I’d recommend this to everyone!
