While the imagery is influenced by a wide range of artists from Gustave Doré to Norwegian landscape painter Lars Hertervig, "Valley" is completely modern in design even as its concept remains timeless.
There's real confidence in the filmmaking, creating a shadowy world that washes over you, in which a boy gets lost in his nightmares, perhaps learning that the monster all children fear is a force to be protected.
The gothic horror tradition is alive and well in moody, brooding Norwegian effort Valley of Shadows, which proves as haunting and gorgeously gloomy as its title suggests.
An intriguing if rarely completely successful piece of work...
The cinematography of Marius Matzow Gulbrandsen is so beautifully framed and textured that it's possible, during the most mesmerizing stretches, to believe that Valley of Shadows is a great debut.
The title Valley of Shadows speaks to its diaphanous nature, a difficult to pin down, ephemeral tale that nonetheless speaks to a greater illumination that helps cast its form.
Beautifully shot and scored, this deliberately paced mood piece should not be missed.
... with his feature debut Valley of Shadows Norwegian director Jonas Matzow Gulbrandsen has crafted one of the year's finest, most deeply affecting psychological dramas.
Gulbrandsen isn't telling a story, he's leading us through one with all the uncertainty necessary to question, interpret, & understand despite no true answers being provided.
It would make an admirable short film, but at feature length the terror becomes tedium.
An entrancing Norwegian gothic fable told with haunting visuals and striking tonal assurance, Valley of Shadows turns childhood fears into a ruminative and resonant horror effort.
