The acting is wooden, the direction and cinematography confused, the special effects largely out of place, the dramatic interest nonexistent.
Xanadu is a mushy and limp musical fantasy, so insubstantial it keeps evaporating before our eyes.
Here's another musical mishap that landed on Creative Loafing's list of The 10 Worst Rock Films Ever Made, taking the #3 slot just under Staying Alive and the champ, Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band.
Yup. This movie is stupid.
Look at Xanadu with an eye toward storytelling superiority and your head will explode. To appreciate the madness within, one must take in the blinding neon sights with an open heart and at least one nostril-coating line of cocaine.
While the movie is every bit as garish and overly shellacked as the other bomb musicals of its era, at least this one looks like irresponsible amounts of money were thrown around.
Semi-Gloss Newton-John, Gene Kelly fantasy musical is dated, but kind of fun.
Kooky abandon and unembarassed chutzpah make it a movie nobody dared to love
Great tunes fill this flavorful bubble gum movie.
campy joyful fun, with a wee bit too much cheese
This horribly dated 1980 fantasy is such a trashy mess with no structure that it doesn't surprise me that the script was written during filming, and even if it has some (few) nice songs, it is shocking how they threw so much money into something that looks so tacky and cheap.
Okay, it won't win any awards, but it's fun and it has a good soundtrack. That Dancin' sound is seriously stuck in my head. Why is this soundtrack not on iTunes??
The guy is seriously miscast as a romantic lead, though. They really should have had a rethink on that one. Maybe that's some of the failure with this.
Deliciously bad and campy. An absolute delight!
This movie is generally regarded as one of the worst movies ever, but it does have some good music, so I gave it one star.
