A prequel to "Yellowstone," "1883" follows the Dutton family as they flee poverty in Texas and embark on a journey through the Great Plains to seek a better future in Montana. Real-life couple Tim McGraw and Faith Hill star as James and Margaret Dutton, while Sam Elliott portrays Shea Brennan, a tough cowboy who has sadness in his past. Other cast members include Isabel May, LaMonica Garrett and Dawn Olivieri. Billy Bob Thornton will guest star and Tom Hanks makes a cameo in a Civil War flashback scene.

I found this miniseries to be relentlessly downbeat, but if you are O.K. with a story about a road trip where just about traveler is doomed to die a horrible death (but not before they kill a lot of other people) you might like this miniseries. Marco L @decatur555 Apr 9 1883 is not just a strong Yellowstone prequel, but a great series on its own. What makes it so powerful is the way it strips the West of romance and turns the journey into something brutal, physical, and deeply tragic. Every mile feels earned through pain, fear, exhaustion, and loss. But the real heart of the show is Isabel May as Elsa Dutton. Her voice-over, her presence, and the way she carries Elsa’s growth from innocence to experience give the whole series its emotional soul. She is extraordinary here. Sam Elliott, Tim McGraw, and Faith Hill are all excellent, and the cinematography is beautiful without ever softening the cruelty of the story. My only reservation is the score, which at times feels too close to The Happening by Pixies. Even so, it is a harsh, moving, and genuinely memorable western drama.
