TOMATOMETER

Critic Consensus: 30 Rock's return not only avoids the pitfalls of a sophomore season, but finds the series hitting its jubilant stride with a trove of quips and ingenious gags.

Tv Season Info

Tina Fey's acclaimed sitcom about the backstage goings-on at a sketch-comedy TV show opens its second series with Jack (Alec Baldwin), the ever-shifty network executive, planning to insert classic clips from "Seinfeld" into current series, a move that doesn't sit well with Jerry Seinfeld. Other episodes find Jack angling to become the new CEO of General Electric; Jack turning to a P.I. (Steve Buscemi) to learn what dirt G.E. is digging up on him; head writer Liz (Fey) hiring an idol (Carrie Fisher) to work on the show; and Jack falling for a congresswoman (Edie Falco) whose political leanings don't match his. The series' other guest stars include Al Gore, David Schwimmer, Elaine Stritch, Dean Winters and Tim Conway, who earned an Emmy Award for his portrayal of a TV star from the 1940s and '50s. Conway was not the season's only Emmy winner, however; Fey, Baldwin and the writing staff all pulled down Emmys, and the show itself was named best comedy.

Critic Reviews for 30 Rock Season 2

When "30 Rock" is clicking like this, it isn't so much a show that you review as one where you list all the jokes that you liked.

"30 Rock" may be the most quotable show in the history of the TVs. Each and every time I sit down to write about it, I'm tempted to list all the lines that make me laugh.

Even though the second season was shortened due to the writer's strike, it isn't short on laughs.

May 9, 2018 | Rating: 9/10 | Full Review…

With Liz tying all the hilarity of "SeinfeldVision" together, 30 Rock delivers a fantastic episode to open the season.

Oct 4, 2007 | Rating: 9.4/10 | Full Review…

What truly elevates 30 Rock is its willingness to follow seemingly throwaway jokes to their logical, full-blown conclusions.

Oct 4, 2007 | Rating: 7/10 | Full Review…

It's a losing game, and 30 Rock used to be too good for it. The writers might want to spend the summer remembering why.

Oct 4, 2007 | Full Review…

What's remarkable is how quickly "30 Rock" has evolved into a true ensemble effort.

Oct 4, 2007 | Full Review…

Its ensemble crackles, its writing is tight and sly, and right now no show better captures New York City.

Oct 4, 2007 | Rating: A | Full Review…

30 Rock is riding high, but its first show back finds pretty much all its characters at their worst.

Mr. Baldwin is too funny in the role to falter for long, and his chemistry with the co-worker he calls Lemon has legs.
