What to Know

Critics Consensus

A likable cast and charming concept couldn't save 3rd Rock from the Sun from the critics, but it would later prove to be more than a Mork and Mindy knockoff.

I'd love to recommend this show unreservedly but until its scripts improve a notch, it's more like an extended sketch, and I find myself caught between a "Rock" and a hard place. Go to Full Review

The cast deserves more consistently funny material. Even extraterrestrials shouldn't have to work this hard for laughs. Go to Full Review

If you can get past the sense that somebody wrote much of this with a Victoria's Secret catalog close at hand, there's actually a charming and perceptive comedy lurking inside, a neat counterpoint to all those series about urbanites on the make. Go to Full Review

Intelligently written and well acted, 3rd Rock generates lots of laughs as viewers look at humanity through the aliens' unique point of view. Go to Full Review

There have been worse shows on television, maybe worse shows from even more unexpected sources. But it's hard to imagine. Go to Full Review

Sadly, Lithgow - one of our finer actors - is often reduced to over-the-top, scenery-chewing histrionics in "3rd Rock." If he isn't embarrassed by this show and his performance in it, he ought to be. Go to Full Review

Leo M Sep 12 The idiotic reviewers who think it's a sub par series don't know anything about the art of clowning and Jacques Lecoq. They don't recognise the skill in the performance because they are too young to review the show. I was alive when it was first on. It taps into character archetypes that are similar to so many families who have autism within their family. I have aspergers and this show is poignant to me. Regular people who weren't around when it was made. Don't know the context and people these days take themselves so seriously that they don't have respect for the genre of self-depreciating clowning that this show does. The script is meant to be loose. On this occasion, I trust the audience more than the critics. Usually I go with the critics. Or at least I used to before they got so serious and myopic, compared to critics from the past who had a much broader open view of things and they were far better educated. A modern(ish) classic in my book. See more 06/19/2022 Good show with a fun premise. Watching the wacky characters try to navigate life on Earth puts a smile on your face. See more 01/12/2022 This show is pretty quirky but it's funny I enjoyed watching it. See more 04/17/2021 First off let me just start by saying DO NOT PAY MOST OF THE CRITICS ANY MIND, most of them are the same species of one bird that all flock together! SECOND I am extremely picky about what I watch on teleLIEvision, this show is BY FAR one of my most favorite shows! John Lithgow, as well as the entire cast, are so unbelievably amazing together. and uplifting to watch! Between the traditional (Carol Brunette, and abbot Castello i.e) type of slapstick comedy, also the oddly adorable and charming naiveté, exudes the writers' imagination of what it really would be like for aliens to assume human identities sent to Earth for human observation. This show is appropriate for most ages (Teens and up). I WOULD if I could give this show 10 out of 5 stars. It's definitely worth watching! See more 10/28/2020 One of the funniest sitcoms ever. Great acting, cast, punchlines, physical comedy, premise and no lame moral storylines. 42 percent from critics 85 percent from audience. Professional critics are clearly useless/out of touch/paid/biased See more Read all reviews
