"A Black Lady Sketch Show" is a shining example of the great work you get when equality comes to comedy. The only criticism I have is that it took so long for us to get here.

When A Black Lady Sketch Show works, it works, offering perspectives that are still, sadly, missing from TV and from comedy.

A Black Lady Sketch Show is a blend of nuanced observations about the systemic invisibilities and challenges of women of color and side-splitting sketch premises.

The ladies, who clearly are all BFFs, are effortlessly, amazingly funny. They poke fun at issues specific to black women, like the care and maintenance of hair... They also take sharp aim at racial issues.

This isn't just a win for representation: A Black Lady Sketch Show is damn hilarious, too, taking insightful swipes at the ridiculousness of modern life, wowing us with big-budget genre parodies and serving up a host of delightful celebrity cameos to boot

Black Lady Sketch Show doesn't disappoint. Thede and her writing staff have a great eye for situations that start out in a normal place and slowly curl in on themselves until they're weirder and weirder and weirder.

A Black Lady Sketch Show is so good that it's positively dumbfounded me.

In this first episode alone I found myself cracking up at just how good all the women are at the physical comedy, but also going so deep into each character-and like all good comedy, being able to take some jabs at society.

The series isn't just breaking ground because it's a black sketch show airing at the same time as another black sketch show: This type of thing just hasn't been done.

Audience Reviews for A Black Lady Sketch Show: Season 1

  • Aug 01, 2020
Was surprised to see the mixed audience score. Really enjoyed this show, and it was good to see so many great guest stars as well. For those who get it it's definitely worth while.
  • Dec 07, 2019
Incredibly creative take on sketch-comedy featuring one of the most marginalize minority groups in full shine. A knockout cast completes the hilarious material from the all female writer's room and a breakout piece for creator and star Robin Thede who is superb.

    HAHAHAHA 100% fresh? Seriously?
  • Nov 29, 2019
    Absolutely brilliant!!!
  • Nov 24, 2019
This show is really cool and super relatable to black women. These ladies are also extremely funny. I love them!
  • Nov 22, 2019
I so wanted to love this show, but it was painfully unfunny. It's hard to understand how it came out so remarkably badly.
  • Nov 22, 2019
Oh, man—this didn't have a single funny moment in it, I'm afraid. How is it possible to put so much money into a show and have it be so painfully bad?
  • Nov 20, 2019
Hilarious, relevant, and fun with an all-star black women cast who bring a new perspective to HBO. You have to be on the pulse of culture to appreciate the comedic genius of this show.
  • Nov 19, 2019
I've never seen anything like it, which is quite refreshing. Entire casts gives there all and the skits are not rehashes of old shows.
  • Nov 17, 2019
This show is so well written and acted. I was hooked after the first Trinity skit and ended up binging the first five episodes in one night, and then watched the whole thing again with my roommate when the last episode aired, we haven't laughed that hard in years. I can't wait to see what they come up with next!
