As an escapist tale of a rise from poverty to great wealth, showing how entitlement makes people lazy and necessity is the mother of invention, it still does the business for me. Go to Full Review

Full of coiled intensity, Reynolds ensures that tiny, hardworking Emma is always the most interesting person in the room. Brenda Blethyn, leaning into the camp elements of her role as the septuagenarian version of Emma, is just as magnetic. Go to Full Review

If you’re going to dip a toe into the reboots and revivals business, it makes sense to swing big. But this brand new 2026 version is still stuck somewhere in the 1980s, and while perfectly watchable...it also feels like a missed opportunity. Go to Full Review

Wendy R @NuttyR 21h I inevitably compared this to the original mini series and think the changes worked well. Deliciously hammy at times, it was a slow burn for me, but I was hooked by the time Emma made her front door entrance into Fairley Hall. I also loved the twist at the very end. Thoroughly enjoyable telly in the old Sunday night drama sense. See more Bondhona P @BonitaBondi Apr 6 Absolutely loved it! As a fan of the books, this series stayed so true to the actual book as it could and it has definitely delivered! See more Kevin B @Sananman Mar 28 A Woman of Substance 2026 leans hard into revenge, and it absolutely delivers. What starts as a slow burn quickly transforms into a sharp, calculated story of payback, power, and control. The direction is tight throughout, but it’s the final three episodes where everything gets turned up to 11. Every move feels deliberate, every confrontation hits harder, and the tension just doesn’t let up. There’s a real sense of momentum as past actions come crashing back with consequences, and the payoff is both satisfying and brutal in all the right ways. It doesn’t try to soften the edges either. This is revenge played straight, and it works because of it. Well directed, confidently executed, and relentless when it matters most. A proper 5-star watch. See more Jon M @RT75884080 Mar 21 Now, as much as I loved Brenda Blethyn in 'Vera', and knowing what a great great actress she is, I was horrified at the way they portrayed the older Emma Harte, I am comparing this to the original 1984 which was a full five star rated show, the changes between the two were huge, there was no second brother in the remake, who had a big storyline in the original, the second wedding, where was that, that was big in the original, and so much more. The brother in this was also weak, from in my opinion a very weak actor, why do we have to have so many woke changes to fit in with what people think is what we have to have, NO, we do not. Edwin, his brother and father were like watching a comedy, with so many odd lines between them, the mother was also comedic, and I am sure that is how they wanted to portray her, and her sister, dear me, another one that just did not fit the story. Where was the biggest support to Emma Harte in the older stages of her life, where he was there in the original See more Read all reviews
