Critic Reviews for American Horror Story Coven

So far, so creepy
If Coven can stay away from scary moments that carry a too-strong whiff of real human suffering and instead serve the chills with enjoyable snark, we'll fall under its spell.
Whatever else happens in the new season, Bates and Lange will be chewing scenery together.
The sheer number of amazing actors who've joined up with creator Ryan Murphy's repertory company is reason enough to watch.
But unlike the series' first two iterations, Murder House and Asylum, Coven has finally figured out a way to incorporate feminism convincingly into the DNA of American Horror Story.
The formula works particularly well in this installment, thanks to uninhibited work by the big-name cast.
Seeing [Jessica Lange and Angela Bassett] cat it out on screen in their various banters was something to live for.
Cult tries to hit close to home but ultimately misses the mark. Clearly, many are living in a true American horror story - why not give viewers an escape or offer real cultural critique instead of simply holding up a funhouse mirror?
It's always hard to tell how any series will go, especially one as reliably twisty and turny as American Horror Story, but in its first hour at least, Coven offers a clear entertaining setup for a potentially strong season.
Hey, I was won over (for at least a week) when, in the midst of a mother-daughter argument, Fiona tells Cordelia, "Don't make me drop a house on you."
There are aspects of Coven that are stylish and clever, and others that are just Carrie on steroids. The cast, of course, is tremendous.
The third installment in Ryan Murphy's American Horror Story dials back the frights for more confident storytelling.

Dec 16, 2020American Horror Story: Coven, tells the storie behind a modern day witch school and their inhabitants, focussing on the search of the new strongest witch, the "Supreme". Although the concept behind the season would offer a broad range of opportunities for horror, Coven ends up feeling more like a teenie show, which is partly due to the young protagonists, but also because of a lack of thrills and scares. Featuring very little gore, the season spends a lot more time on character introduction and development, than on establishing a scary or thrilling atmosphere. Likewise, due to the fictional setting, death loses a lot of fright, as people can very easily be brought back to life, just as well as torn limbs can be rebuilt. Covens plot is pretty linear, however not boring and it is fun to see the characters grow and witness the numerous intrigues unfold. Nonetheless, the setting and the overall pretty timid characters give the story a rather light and friendly feel, which does not fit too well with the American Horror Story Series. All in all, American Horror Story: Coven is a pretty entertaining season, but lacks a lot of scares and horror scenes, whis is especially disappointing since the seasons theme would have offered many possibilities. Thus, I would recommend this season to people who favour an interesting plot and deep characters over scares and thrills. You will like this season if you enjoyed The Covenant, The Craft or Chilling Adventures of Sabrina.

Nov 21, 2020American Horror Story: Coven, without a doubt, is one of the best seasons of the series, with a great plot, and a good development.
-
Nov 05, 2020A creative way to be fun and twisted at the same time. The way they presented diversity in terms of ethnicity and physical limitation is non exploitative but very well woven to the fabric of the story. The rise of Sarah Paulson as the new Queen of AHS universe was beautifully done with Jessica Lange turning over the crown. The queens of AHS never fails to deliver. Frances Conroy's Myrtle Snow is simply worth remembering.

Oct 27, 2020This is the absolute worse season of the first three seasons
-
Oct 05, 2020American Horror Story: Coven changes up the typical formula for a fun but sometimes bumpy ride.
-
Aug 06, 2020A meditation on youth and death. AHS again constructs an intriguing, dream-like story with a strong performance by Jessica Lange. This season, however, didn't explore the depths of the other characters to any substantial degree, leaving many of them feeling distant or one-dimensional.
