"Blast Radius" proves to be less bang and more whimper as back half of Arrow's sophomore season loses energy with weak plotting.
For all the explosive potential of its title and subject matter, Arrow 's post-hiatus comeback episode is more fizzing firecracker than full-on demolition job, more sputter than ka-boom.
After the mid-season finale, I think pretty much anything was going to feel like a bit of a letdown, but I wasn't expecting "Blast Radius" to be that much of a letdown.
'Arrow' has amassed much more confidence and momentum in its second season than the year before it, that "Blast Radius" has enough going on to coast on the strength of its characters alone.
In spite of its positive merits, "Blast Radius" sits as a somewhat minor Arrow episode.
This was an ok return or the show... I almost wish they would steer a little bit away from some of the DC comic book storylines and characters to give us a few more surprises.
'Blast Radius' is a perfectly serviceable Arrow episode, but following a month-long hiatus, the show needed to return with something just a little bigger...a little bolder.
["Blast Radius"] suffered from one of the show's familiar flaws, but still kept a lot of plates spinning and offered plenty of memorable moments along the way.
"Blast Radius" isn't bad, but it definitely felt more disposable than some other entries.
This season is certainly building to a face-off between Arrow and Blood...but the Villains of the Week stand a good chance of getting lost in the shuffle.
After Arrow's climactic run to finish out 2013, "Blast Radius" feels like an opportunity for the show to catch its breath.
