If the show is going to give backstory to a secondary character, it needs to be someone we actively want to see more of.
Fitting each character into a specific slot -- makes things easier in terms of getting various points of view across, but it also eliminates any chance that Arrow would be able to address the issue with subtlety or nuance.
It was a rare episode of Arrow that wasn't afraid to truly go there.
Spectre of the Gun didn't just show us character growth, it also tackled meaningful issues
If Arrow feels like getting political, I welcome the move, and I accept that such uncharted territory will have its clumsiness.
This was the show runners tackling a current day headline topic where super heroics couldn't get the job done. In that regard, it hit the mark.
