Critic Reviews for Astronomy Club: The Sketch Show Season 1

All Critics (8) | Top Critics (3)

Episodes in this first season, each around 20 minutes, make for such addictive viewing that I had to resist bingeing them all at once.

Dec 9, 2019 | Full Review…

Astronomy Club immediately found its sweet spot by navigating wry social commentary and wild observational humor.

Apr 20, 2020 | Full Review…

With only six episodes, there's not a whole lot of time for everyone to differentiate themselves, and yet the Astronomy Club manages it just fine by making the time it does have count.

Dec 6, 2019 | Full Review…

Whip-smart and absolutely hilarious, this skit show nails every topic it takes on, with an absurdity and wit that rival classic sketch comedies like Saturday Night Live, Key & Peele, and The Kids in the Hall.

The finished product, in all its glorious eccentricity, is out of this world.

Dec 30, 2019 | Full Review…

Not all the sketches work, but they've mastered the group game.

Dec 17, 2019 | Rating: 3/5 | Full Review…

Astronomy Club is a delightful sketch comedy show for a number of reasons, but I'm sure its stars would be happy to know that, if this were an episode of Black Men Can't Jump..., the series would get a raised black fist.

Dec 16, 2019 | Rating: 8.6/10 | Full Review…

Astronomy Club presents a balanced comedy diet, equal parts pop-culture parody, commentary on the contemporary black American experience, and evergreen satire.

Do you remember "In living color"? Did you love it? This show is everything like it. Just like "In living color" astronomy club is breathing fresh air into black comedy. But also being original and new at the same time. The cast is full of life and I love watching those guys act. I hope we can see more seasons of this.

How in the fuck did this get a 100%...

This show is TERRIBLE. What is smart or funny about a piece of sentient garlic attacking a vampire? That isn't comedic escalation; that is a writer's room decision gone wrong. Every single sketch in episode 1, Key and Peele examined those concepts in ways that are 1000% times funnier and better executed. And A Black Lady Sketch Show that came out on HBO recently; sooooo smart and funny and original and includes examinations of race as well as just plain original comedy. Nothing smart or original about the Astronomy Club sketches, and that is combined with the hammy, overacted execution. Every single examination of race in this show feels like an us vs. them dynamic that makes me feel alienated rather than providing an insightful commentary that makes me laugh and helps everyone recognize the common thread of humanity in us all. There's so many examples of this that come to mind but the Robin hood sketch was especially problematic to me. They took the Robin hood story which inherently has no racial aspect since it was set in medieval England and then they somehow twist it to Robin hood stealing from black people? What kind of social commentary is that trying to make? What, just that white people steal from black people all the time and "just don't get it" and that's it? It just seems so overly simplified and not at all nuanced. Maybe this show just really isn't for me, but there are sooo many other African American comedic shows that are doing this so much better. It is completely beyond me why there aren't many bad reviews out there. It is NOT a good show. Also, why did they think a real world parody would be funny? Those kinds of parodies have been done and over done and these are characters that I don't know so why do you think I care about them? This is supposed to be a sketch comedy show and the real world parody is not a sketch, it just tries to take these goofy characters and have them act goofy around each other but there's no central joke so it's all just too weak for me to really enjoy
