What to Know

Critics Consensus

Baptiste begins its second season with a discombobulating state of affairs; good thing Fiona Shaw is on deck to magnetically lead viewers through this new mystery.

There's a world-weary melancholy drenching everything and a tincture of subtle commentary about the underbelly of politics in that part of Europe. Go to Full Review

I thought that series two of Baptiste would be a great opportunity for me to get into it again, but I couldn't. I found the flashbacks and flash forwards really quite jarring. Go to Full Review

Much of the suspense this season derives from knowing some terrible things must have happened during his investigation, as the flashbacks fill in the gaps. Go to Full Review

Shaw turned out to be the show's driving force, with enough acting and star power to bring the series home with its credibility mostly intact. Go to Full Review

Judging from the man's previous outings, and the first two episodes here, patience will certainly be required. But I'm also prepared to bet that it will be rewarded. Go to Full Review

Joe C @JoeCoffee 02/04/2025 Drastic drop in quality from Season 1. Fiona Shaw over-emoting in nearly every scene she inhabits and Baptiste's wife is reduced to a shrewish scold. This is the fault of the writers, of course, who also overused flashback & flash-forwards to add some zip to what is a shallow mystery and failing miserably. Season 1 also benefited from the powerhouse performance by Tom Hollander. Sadly, there's nothing of that caliber here. See more 01/10/2022 Story not convincing at all. Sentimental. Very melodramatic. Very weak compared to the 1st seasonof Baptiste. See more 12/06/2021 I cannot believe how absurd and implausible this season is. Did no one along the course of producing this show do any research at all into the life and work of the diplomatic corps and what that actually means? She was a UK ambassador; an attack on her is like an attack on the UK. She would've been immediately recalled to London for her protection and dozens of agents would've been sent to Hungary to deal with the attack on her family. That should would be walking around Budapest, unprotected and on her own, is ridiculous. For starters, from the get-go, she would've been protected by military or security guards—she's an ambassador! And the idea that London would not follow up on the attack and that it would need to be solved by the ragtag little trio—it just beggars belief. The storyline is just ludicrous. See more 12/05/2021 Enjoyed the first season. The second season is SLOW moving. Could have benefit from significant editing, perhaps winding up with a total of 2 episodes in the end. Has felt like more of a school assignment to see the whole thing through. Wouldn't seek it out for a further season, that's for certain. Disappointing this time around. See more 11/01/2021 I watched the first season of Baptiste and thought it was pretty well-played. However, with the second season, I've watched 2 episodes and will not be continuing. It is so disjointed and distracting with the constant back-and-forth between present and past. It was very confusing and unenjoyable for me. See more cindy m @CindyCindy 10/19/2021 Unoriginal. That sums up Season 2. Watch, and dislike Mrs Dursley, be frustrated with a broken Julien and realize you have little sympathy or empathy with two basically unlikable leads. What a waste of talent!
