Barry might be shadowy but it's never grim, and it is unexpectedly insightful.

Great work from Hader and Henry Winkler as his acting teacher elevates the story to something that stuck with me stubbornly all year.

Hader is a tragicomic marvel as a bad man trying to be a better human by becoming a terrible actor.

An understated treat.

It works because of that fabulous juxtaposition, a perfect storm of horror and hilarity.

Hader's rubbery mien summons memories of the dolts, doofuses, and oddballs he played on Saturday Night Live, but here he upends expectations, draining some of the warmth and playfulness from his usual manner.

Barry is just the right kind of bizarre from beginning to end, stepping up its shocks and gut-punches steadily and quietly as the series rolls along.

Berg and Hader make the smart choice to keep the action moving at a constant clip to mask the table-setting. Barry communicates its main character's ennui in brief moments.

The show is similarly binary: silly and engaging, sunny and dark. It's funny where it wants to be, and sometimes isn't funny at all.

No Hellraiser film has fully reckoned with the existential weight of Pinhead's lot in life, but Barry comes close.

Barry is a series where Bill Hader confirms he's much more than a mugging sketch comic. He's a compelling actor with a unique voice who's created one of the best new shows of the year.

The whole half-hour package, debuting next Sunday on HBO, is like a mash-up of Breaking Bad and Love, but honestly, even that doesn't quite capture the vibe.
March 23, 2018
A funny, violent, gripping and masterfully melancholy half-hour show.

It's fine to come to Barry for the laughs (there are plenty) but don't be surprised if you wind up coming back for the unexpected, and unexpectedly moving, character study.

Hader provides such a powerful core as Barry.

It's an out-there concept that results in a series that's simultaneously hopeful and incredibly cynical, comedic and violent, heightened and grounded. And Hader is the perfect man to balance these disparate elements.

The series likely wouldn't have worked with one-hour episodes. But in a half-hour's time, Barry maximizes its punching power while knowing when and how to drop in a sight gag.

But this HBO series from Bill Hader and "Silicon Valley's" Alec Berg turns into something more interesting, a bittersweet dramedy that's uncomfortably funny and simultaneously dark and tense.
March 23, 2018
Over the course of the season, Barry amounts to something, locating a hit man's shared humanity not in his competence, his guilt, or his remorse, but in his delusional belief that he's a decent person.
March 23, 2018
You don't expect this comedy to find its target in the way it does. And as Barry could tell you, that element of surprise is the mark of a professional.
