Season 2 had its problems, but astounding sequences like that suggest new evolutions ahead. Barry can't change, but I hope Barry does.

Barry's mission isn't to bust all the stereotypes it encounters, but the ones it bothers to dismantle have yielded such ingenuity and charm that it's a shame the show doesn't think just a little bigger.

It contains enough weird, sweet, funny, rumpled and sinister characters to make a few more half-hours worth watching.

In its second season, Barry is sadder, with the gap between its madcap Chechen gangster plots and interludes of moral reckoning proving even more yawning.

It's a pitch-perfect introduction to the season, partially because it features some of the series' best writing and direction right out of the gate.

The darkness gets darker, yet "Barry" is sticking to its comedic intent and half-hour format. This is remarkable, given that it plays as intensely and satisfyingly as "Breaking Bad" once did.

And so another exceptional season of Barry comes to a close with an appropriately explosive ending.

Barry was the best episode TV last night... And in a season of really incredible work, it proved that not only is Barry one of the best shows on TV right now, it's also one of the best horror shows ever.
April 21, 2019
It's as funny as it is dark - and it's packed with real pathos.

HBO's dark comedy, Barry, is able to hit the mark during the sophomore season and the series capably avoids the sophomore slump.

Barry Season 2 is effortlessly easy to watch and continues to examine the difficulties of being honest with who you are deep inside and the elusive questions of whether we can change.

Barry remains somewhat unclassifiable, other than to classify it as excellent. In season 2, it's also become HBO's best comedy running.

The style Berg and Hader are setting up is essentially a go-for-broke mentality, and it provides an extra layer of tension on top of the ticking bomb of Barry's mental health.

No matter how deep into the darkest parts of its main character's heart the show plunges, it never forgets just how many comedic tools it has at its disposal.

Barry resets the table effortlessly, introducing new threats and shades to characters while still having a masterful hold over the show's disparate tone.

Each episode in the second season so far improves on where the last left off. While not as laugh as loud funny as any given episode in season one, it's no less engrossing.

Dark and funny are a delicate balance to pull off convincingly, but "Barry" again proves it's that rare show that knows how to do it.

The unique excellence of the second season... is how adroitly Hader and co-creator Alec Berg find ways to raise the stakes for Barry while keeping the show's tone darkly amused.

Slowly but surely, Barry turns into a show about people who can't acknowledge the truth about themselves, even when it's staring them right in the face.
March 29, 2019
The show deftly juggles a variety of tones, managing to be funny, quirky and intense all at once, while again showcasing Henry Winkler in his brilliant, Emmy-winning role as the acting teacher who keeps pressing Barry to tap into his dark side.
March 29, 2019
The second season of Barry...is even more darkly funny and shrewd than the first, Emmy-winning season was.

This could slip into being the kind of depression-fueled cable anti-hero drama parodied as Philbert in the most recent season of Bojack Horseman. So far we're on the safe side and there's much to be impressed by in Barry and its shifting identity.

Barry, like the series that shares his name, is still in a dark place this season. While the wannabe actor might not want to hear this, that's a place that suits him, and Barry, just perfectly.
