Updesh D @RT76937637 01/25/2025 Cardinal is what smart TV should be. It’s what the pastiche Nordic noir we see pretends to be. The two leads have such a true and honest connection you feel what they feel. The dialogue is tight, spare and powerful, but what makes it special is the physical presence they bring to each scene. The scenery is used properly and is another character. The final pillar of what raises this above peer TV is the cinematography, the way scenes are shot, is so carefully thought through. There are many qualities also here but sadly, like season 2 neither the third season of Cardinal can compare to what the makers achieved with the first. Some characters are just not very credible, possibly due to several less convincing acting performances, but also the plot doesn't quite catch up. There was a strong resemblance to the themes of season 2 (delusional cult leader with a bewilderingly few acolytes) and Jack and Mama were woefully miscast. I no more thought Jack was a damaged and dangerous psychopath than I thought Mama had powerful enough charisma to draw in followers. There were plot holes and inconsistencies too, which I might have been able to overlook if not for the aforementioned shortcomings.
