Chelsea: Season 1 (2016)

Season 1

Critics Consensus

Chelsea comes up short in its attempts to innovate the conventional talk show format -- and even worse, it frequently fails to be smart or funny.

Critic Reviews for Chelsea Season 1

All Critics (22) | Top Critics (13)

Chelsea may be off to a shaky start, but for those who want to wait for the show to find its feet before checking out some episodes, there should be an interesting backlog of segments in a few weeks.

Chelsea Handler is the sort of person about whom people tend to have strong feelings: You like her or you don't and will watch Chelsea accordingly. But Chelsea is interesting beyond its specifics, as a Netflix experiment.

Why? Well, "Chelsea" is still figuring that out.

It all depends on where you fall along the Chelsea Handler enjoyability spectrum. More than any other talk show, this is all about the host. If you like her, give it a try. If not, chill elsewhere.

It's not as though Handler is admirably swinging for the fences and missing, she's striking out while attempting a bunt.

As anyone recalls from their first days of school, you don't actually learn anything. That's certainly true of Chelsea, too. The premiere is often very fun, especially when Handler's eye-roll-driven plain-talking sense of humor slips in off the cuff.

It's a big gamble for Netflix, but also a welcome reprieve from the current late-night landscape.

Jan 18, 2017 | Full Review…

If Handler's new show isn't exactly breaking the mold quite yet, this early offering is unexpected in an entirely different way: its host is salty and acerbic as ever, but Chelsea is surprisingly earnest and heartfelt-even, dare I say, mushy?

Sep 21, 2016 | Full Review…

If Handler rediscovers that bite that we love, that willingness to excoriate her victims with a laugh, perhaps "Chelsea" can have a long life on Netflix. Without that, it's just Goop with Grey Goose.

Mar 28, 2019 | Full Review…

Handler's longtime fans may be willing to "Chelsea" and chill, but it's difficult to see how this particular offering will expand that narrow base.

Chelsea brings her unique humor, in an environment where she can be free to do it. love this show!

This woman is too gross to be funny.

Had to disinfect MY tv after 2 minutes of watching this garbage

This show is equal parts hilarious and insightful. There are elements in here for data nerds, political nerds, comedy lovers and more. Obviously the insights are liberal, and Chelsea throws in her trademark shock-value comedy where appropriate. It is a well-balanced comedy political talk show, and hopefully a trend-setting series for the future of "television" style content.

    Just not funny or entertaining

How anyone can watch a show hosted by a woman that brags about having abortions is beyond me.

Love this show, I have watched every single episode. This show is different and I like it because not only you get your doce of dog cuteness but you are introduced to subjects you probably wouldnt know about if it wasn't because of the show. Because of the fact that sometimes the show talks about subject you are not interested about it could get boring but I don't care because it's informing me about a subject I wouldn't know about if it wasn't because of Chelsea and if I really hate a segment in the show, the show is on Netflix you can just fastfoward that part, and in my opinion being introduced to new subjects makes me a more interesting person; thanks to the information I get from the show now I can have conversations with people who I have nothing in comon with. I also love that Chealsea introduces you to people who are not only celebrities you sometimes are introduced to a complete stranger you never heard about and he is completely awesome human. This show is educative in a good way something you will never get with any of the jimmy's. This show is pretty much the only reason I still pay for Netflix. The first season is coming to an end soon in a couple of weeks and I think I will just be watching reruns of her. I want this show to last forever!!!
