If Handler rediscovers that bite that we love, that willingness to excoriate her victims with a laugh, perhaps "Chelsea" can have a long life on Netflix. Without that, it's just Goop with Grey Goose.

Handler's longtime fans may be willing to "Chelsea" and chill, but it's difficult to see how this particular offering will expand that narrow base.

It's not as though Handler is admirably swinging for the fences and missing, she's striking out while attempting a bunt.

If Chelsea is a work in progress - someone had better get to work.

Chelsea may be off to a shaky start, but for those who want to wait for the show to find its feet before checking out some episodes, there should be an interesting backlog of segments in a few weeks.

Chelsea Handler is the sort of person about whom people tend to have strong feelings: You like her or you don't and will watch Chelsea accordingly. But Chelsea is interesting beyond its specifics, as a Netflix experiment.

Why? Well, "Chelsea" is still figuring that out.

As anyone recalls from their first days of school, you don't actually learn anything. That's certainly true of Chelsea, too. The premiere is often very fun, especially when Handler's eye-roll-driven plain-talking sense of humor slips in off the cuff.

It all depends on where you fall along the Chelsea Handler enjoyability spectrum. More than any other talk show, this is all about the host. If you like her, give it a try. If not, chill elsewhere.

It's a big gamble for Netflix, but also a welcome reprieve from the current late-night landscape.

If Handler's new show isn't exactly breaking the mold quite yet, this early offering is unexpected in an entirely different way: its host is salty and acerbic as ever, but Chelsea is surprisingly earnest and heartfelt-even, dare I say, mushy?

Handler's apparently got a pretty photogenic set of friends, but, like almost everything on Instagram, it's much more fun to imagine what her gal pals are talking about than actually overhear their conversations.

Although Chelsea is so far fairly trifling, it's got an appealingly loose, shaggy vibe - less "late night" than "morning after."

Inquisitive Chelsea is a talk show host I might periodically want to check in on. Pompously Dim-Witted Chelsea is a show I can pass on.
May 16, 2016
Despite Handler's claims that it's a "different" kind of show, the overall series offers the standard talk show format and conversations that are marginally funny.

While her quest for innovation should be applauded, the show is not amazing yet -- no matter when you watch it.
May 12, 2016
Even though she's been given a get-out-of-jail-free pass from Netflix, Handler still chooses the same conventional structure that everyone else has.

The idea is that Handler hopes to learn a lot from her new show, though her own rapping to end it is the most embarrassing. Still, not breaking for commercials makes all the difference.
May 11, 2016
Curiosity and insecurity -- this is not the worst way to begin a talk show.
May 11, 2016
By the end of the episode, Ms. Handler was standing on the set's revolving table, rapping in front of Pitbull. It was excruciating.
