6/10
City of Shadows manages suspense with restraint: information is doled out gradually, plot twists avoid becoming overwhelming, and the staging incorporates urban architecture as an active part of the narrative. [Full review in Spanish] Go to Full Review

City of Shadows has some great character personalities, but utterly fails on the narrative side. It takes too long to get going, and too much of what it tries to do fails to feel cohesive with the larger story. Go to Full Review

The murder mystery is decent; don’t expect to be wowed and you’ll be fine. The anti-capitalist messaging is alright. The visual storytelling is okay-ish. The performances are splendid across the board. Go to Full Review

City Of Shadows goes into that large middle category of shows, ones that are decent enough but don’t distinguish themselves by offering viewers much that they haven’t seen a number of times before. Go to Full Review
Jonathon Wilson Ready Steady Cut Dec 12
3.5/5
Well-produced, paced, and performed, City of Shadows has the usual seal of quality of Spanish Netflix productions and the typical touchstones of the genre, which helps to keep it engaging, if not necessarily to stand out. Go to Full Review

R Venu G @Maestroadi Jan 23 City of Shadows slowly develops, powerful characters and strong concept but somehow it utterly fails on the narrative side with too much time taken to move into a state of action. By the end of fourth episode only some clarity comes into being and then it's over within 2 episodes. Still it is watchable in parts See more Mike W Jan 8 Wow, what a grab bag of cliches. The only thing original are the bodies + Gaudi buildings. A detective on disciplinary leave, who is assigned a partner he doesn't like, and who has domestic problems. Good grief, how many times have we seen that? It's done, beaten to death (no pun intended). Plus a paint-by-numbers script, with characters so dull and indistinct it's hard to tell them apart. The biggest mystery about this series is how it ever was funded in the first place. See more Mark W @BkylnCritic Dec 29 The writing and acting are passable. What makes this series worth watching is the treatment of its setting: Barcelona. The story provides an excuse for enjoying the spectacular weirdness of Gaudi's architecture while montages of historical footage provide the backdrop to the dynamics of a changing city. See more Dave L @Davisimo Dec 29 This feels like it was written by AI. See more Chris M. @CriMcD Dec 20 This show is Terrible. Why it's got a 100% is beyond my comprehensive. The acting is horrific, especially theain character, ever emote he tries to make looks like he's taking a dump and struggling to get it out. The voice actors are flat throughout & I recognize several from other shows where they did pretty good. Do yourself 2favor & skip this Bore Fest, watch Billionaires Bunker if you want a Better film from Spain on Netflix.
