Brainy, sardonic Daria Morgendorffer tries to fly under the radar at Lawndale High School, and she's doing a pretty good job of it: Her self-esteem teacher can't even remember her name. Not that low self-esteem is a problem for Daria, who explains that "I have low esteem for everyone else." Frankly, she couldn't care less about the airheads in the "in" crowd, like her sister, Quinn, or cheerleader Brittany. At least best friend Jane Lane is readily available any time Daria needs a break from all the clueless masses around them.

Critics Consensus

While balancing sarcasm and subversive sensibility, Daria challenges social norms most teens can relate to.

A remarkable show... So few animations have female characters, let alone central characters whose cynical take on the world makes Voltaire look like Forrest Gump. Go to Full Review

Though scheduled as a children's show, this is thoroughly adult in the elegance of the dialogue, the savagery of the wit and the admirable blasting of its satirical targets. Go to Full Review

Despite her popularity problems, Daria should be a big MTV hit. By the way: great theme song by Splendora, too. Go to Full Review

Boomer audiences may recognize Daria as a spiritual daughter of some of the characters created by Elaine May back in the '60s, but MTV's core audience of younger viewers can enjoy the character and her show on their own terms. Go to Full Review
Aaron Barnhart Kansas City Star 04/06/2021
Daria and her best friend Jane Lane can articulate their teen-age dread uninhibited... This gift, as well the parade of bit characters who pass through her life, help imbue this show with an authenticity today's standard-issue TV sitcoms can't match. Go to Full Review

St E @RT95059656 01/28/2025 Shows struggles of a girl who feels unncomfortable and hummilieted in every social situation. She tries to distance herself from those, but parents being being parents, often force those on her. She's angry when the world exludes her becose how they see her, and she feels even worse when they include her, becose of superficial things about her. She usess sarcasm and clever remarks, to make entire social situation humillieted and stupid. She's friends with Jane Lane, artsy teen with no parents, who was clearly failed by the world, and hated by it becose how she presents herself. Their moments give me life. Characters, while a little over the top, are still charming. It has some emberssment humor, wich I'm not the biggest fun of, but it does serve it themes It also has some clever social commentary, from perspective of our main character, Daria. If you're looking for something that will make you think or lough, Daria is a great choice. If you wanna feel your feeliings, you prabobly won't be thrilled with it See more JF H @RT36223713 03/03/2023 This is pure sarcasm and dry but good humor. See more 06/19/2022 Dry humor & wit that is easy to relate to. The series starts to lose steam when Daria's love life become overly focused on. See more Read all reviews
