Set in 1971 on a remote outpost of the Navajo Nation near Monument Valley, Dark Winds follows Lieutenant Joe Leaphorn of the Tribal Police as he is besieged by a series of seemingly unrelated crimes. The closer he digs to the truth, the more he exposes the wounds of his past. He is joined on this journey by his new deputy, Jim Chee. Chee, too, has old scores to settle from his youth on the reservation. Together, the two men battle the forces of evil, each other and their own personal demons on the path to salvation.

With its deep period inhalation of Navajo life, and flashes of supernatural suggestion that deliver horror vibes, Dark Winds is atmospheric, but there’s also an embrace of thrills. Go to Full Review

Nicely crafted, but still Hillerman-lite. Go to Full Review

At this point, Dark Winds is already doing variations on its own themes. But they're good themes, and interesting variations. Change can be overrated sometimes, when you're already good at what you do. Go to Full Review

It doesn’t matter if you’ve been watching from the beginning or just tuning in for this season, Dark Winds is the best hidden gem TV show of 2026 so far, and it’s hard to imagine another show unseating its traditional structure and innovative story. Go to Full Review

While the fourth season of Dark Winds is taking a chance by going off the rez, seeing Leaphorn, Chee and Manuelito facing big changes brings interesting context to what might be normally be considered a standard police thriller case. Go to Full Review

If old Sundance [Robert Redford] was still kicking, he’d surely approve of this new season because it’s a fitting homage to his ‘70s heyday and builds upon the gritty, rollickingly adventurous tone of that bygone era. Go to Full Review

Dorethea K @Zoemonroe 2d I think the whole series is great and should be renewed for many more seasons Dorethea kennedy See more Michael Shane B @KVD1969 4d The AMC Networks series Dark Winds returned for its fourth season on February 15, 2026, delivering an expanded eight-episode arc on both AMC+ and Netflix. The storyline kicks off with the high-stakes disappearance of 16-year-old Billie Tsosie, a case that pulls Navajo Tribal Police Lieutenant Joe Leaphorn away from thoughts of retirement and into a violent investigation. Alongside his partner Jim Chee and the returning Bernadette Manuelito, Leaphorn matches wits with a relentless German contract killer named Irene Vaggan, played by Franka Potente. The case forces the detectives to travel beyond the reservation borders all the way to 1970s Los Angeles as they uncover a grand conspiracy involving a corrupt businessman eliminating federal witnesses. Although Leaphorn ultimately captures Irene in an explosive confrontation, the season ends on a major cliffhanger following the shocking murder of former Sheriff Gordo Sena, perfectly setting up the already-renewed fifth season. See more Sheri F @Sherimor78 Aug 12 They went to far. Took away the best quality music is ridiculous See more Jack W @jackwww57 Aug 9 This season is just terrible. The German assassin thing is just so bad. They should just stick to the books. See more Washington I @Washey Aug 8 Season 4 started out on a good note and then quickly degraded into such an annoying tone that it was hard to take it seriously. The first disconnect was the characterization of Chee's response to Joe retiring and telling Bern she was his choice as his replacement. It was so very typically childish it could have been lifted from one of any C-grade melodramas. Then a long list of new plot elements were introduced with no integration with the story line. There were also scenes such as a gun shot would to the arm of which miraculously was apparently healed in 5 minutes. The final straw was where Joe beguiled his captor, apparently incapacitated her enough to be 1 step away from escaping, only to find she was able to quickly recover and re-capture Joe and Billie. The writers left so many gaping holes and jagged edges in the story line that it became impossible to ignore. How the professional critics rated this 100% is beyond comprehension. See more Rosetta C @Colette940 Jul 27 Still one of the most underrated shows around. The mystery kept me interested, and I really appreciate that it takes its time instead of rushing everything.
