What to Know

Critics Consensus

Deep State is dense with terrific actors and slick action, but it's disappointingly shallow in dramatic depth as it fails to get to the bottom of its characters or offer much insight into the geopolitical arena.

As it races through a range of locations - Beirut, Tehran, France, Britain and the US - and initially also jumps around in time, Deep State is powered by a momentum hooked on Max's ethics and his need to protect his family. Go to Full Review

The familiar sights and sounds - the arrogance and avarice of Americans, the inevitable presence of sharp objects on desktops during fights to the death - are presented with a businesslike restraint that makes them reasonably credible. Go to Full Review

There's not much to fault in the execution that isn't nit-picking... We have seen enough of such stories that not every twist will prove a surprise, and as if to remedy this, many twists have been given twists of their own. Go to Full Review

John W 08/13/2023 This series pulls of a truly amazing feat: telling a tired old TV & movie trope that's been done to death and managing to make it engaging. I started watching in spite of reading the premise (retired spy forced to do one last job, all is not as it seems, ...) because (a) it's from a non-USA production team, and (b) I really like Mark Strong and am gutted that he's not a bigger star. The show has fairly predictable plot arcs and very little genuine jeopardy (of main characters being killed) but is saved by terrific acting, direction, editing, cinematography etc. Watch it! You won't be disappointed. Unless you are a hormonal male teenager, perhaps. See more 04/08/2022 This isn't a bad spy adventure series, but it should have been titled something like "Save the innocents", because for the most part. All the main characters do is run around trying to keep innocent family members and friends, from being killed by the bad guys. In spite of a really stellar cast in both seasons. The series is really kind of subpar with a lot of melodrama. It would have been so much more interesting and entertaining. If the production company had used the really talented actors, and what appears to be a good sized production budget. To create a series that would be more in keeping with a Jason Bourne, or Jack Ryan type of action drama. As I watched the series, I became more and more disappointed with the melodramatic writing, and ridiculous plots. Characters who are supposed to be people that are accustomed to death and carnage. Are suddenly turned into people that should have been working for some humanitarian charity, rather than working for spy agencies. I really like the actor Mark Strong, and it was fun seeing him in his role. Watching Walton Goggins' "go off" on Anastasia Griffith's character, yelling just inches away from her face was both well done and amusing. I didn't much care for various British actors using fair to not so good American accents, Southern in particular. This wasn't a terrible series, but it really could have been so much better. See more 12/30/2019 Excellent characters. Non-trivial, realistic plot line (vs. Homeland in later seasons). Filmed in diverse geographies which added to its distinctiveness. It's good. See more 12/24/2019 The plot for this season was so over the top it's unbelievable. I like the Max Easton character and his gravitas kind of makes up for the ridiculous plot lines. See more 12/06/2019 A controversial take on America's wars makes a different and twisty story. The serial does not try to vilify anyone in the MiddleEast which may not sit easily with many in the US in particular. The action parts are similar to other serials of the genre and add little new. See more 10/18/2019 Another example of the critics getting it completely wrong. This is a great show, with a very good story, and great acting. Mark Strong, is a terrific actor who really shines in this role. Im not big on spy shows much anymore, because of the same ole, same ole. This show is not that at all. See more Read all reviews
